About The Course

Offered to undergraduates in the Food Science & Technology Major, FST2205: Industry Immersion in Food Science & Technology is an intensive 10 day course that offers students the opportunity to explore the global food industry and gain exposure to the industry applications of food processing, manufacturing, safety, and distribution. Join us in Shanghai and Suzhou as we visit leading research institutes and food companies including Wilmar and the NUS (Suzhou) Research Institute  to gain a nuanced understanding of the dynamic global food landscape beyond the borders of Singapore.

Through a combination of lectures and experiential learning, students will gain insight into the entire journey of food production, from raw commodities to consumer-ready products. Topics covered may include the principles of food preservation, the role of packaging in ensuring product quality, and managing the food supply chain for efficient distribution.

Dates

The programme dates are from 8 December – 17 December 2024.

Students are expected to arrive in Shanghai by 8 December 2024.

Location

The programme takes place in Shanghai and Suzhou, China.

Syllabus

The course consists of lectures, field trips and cultural visits.

Eligibility Criteria
NUS students must:
  • Be a full-time Faculty of Science student.
  • Have a good disciplinary record.
  • National Servicemen who are not called up for In-Camp Training (ICT). Deferment letter will not be provided.
  • Be fully vaccinated. (Please refer to the requirements to enter China)

At the end of the course, you will earn 4 units which can be used towards fulfilling Unrestricted Elective requirement. The S/U option can be exercised on this course.

Programme Cost

Students do not need to pay NUS Special Term fees, but are responsible for making arrangements for their air travel, meals and personal expenses. Local accommodations and ground travel will be arranged for students.

Eligible students* selected for this programme may apply for the FoS Global Classroom Grant (capped at $500). This is one-time grant, subjected to review by the faculty.

For students who require additional financial support, you may also apply for the Science Student Overseas Exposure Fund (SSOEF). and the NASA (NUS Awards for Study Abroad) Enhancement Bursary (open to Singaporeans).

The NASA Enhancement Scholarship is also available on a competitive basis to students* selected for this programme. The scholarship will be granted based on academic merit.

Please note that this course involves financial commitment. Financial aid and grants provided will only defray some of the costs. The above-mentioned financial aid will only be disbursed after completion of the overseas programme. Your decision to sign up for this course should be independent of whether you will be successful in your funding application.

Insurance

All students travelling overseas for activities or purposes approved, endorsed, organised, sponsored or authorised by NUS will be covered by the NUS Student Travel Insurance Policy. Click here (under Insurance Cover for Official NUS Trips) for more information.

Exclusions to the NUS Student Travel Insurance may apply. Students are to ensure that they have sufficient travel insurance coverage, and may consider purchasing additional travel insurance if required.
